DIRECT STATEMENTS, QUESTIONS AND COMMANDS

DIRECT STATEMENTS

A direct statement is a simple statement like ‘I walked the dog’.

DIRECT QUESTIONS

Direct questions quote exactly what someone has asked - e.g. ‘What are you doing?’

Direct questions are formed with either:

  • Interrogative pronouns such as ‘quis?’ or ‘quid?’, or with interrogative words such as ‘quo?’ or ‘quando?’

  • adding -ne to the end of an emphatic word in the question

  • nonne? - opening a question expecting the answer no

  • num? - opening a question expecting the answer yes

These introduce the questions, which are then followed by a normal structured sentence.

DIRECT COMMANDS

Direct commands are formed with the imperative mood. (Visit the page on imperatives in the grammar section of the website)
